A bizarre own goal helped Barnsley back into the play-off positions in a 2-0 win at Fleetwood Town on Saturday.

The Reds were gifted the lead two minutes into the second half when Fleetwood centre-back Joe Davis went to head a long ball back to his goalkeeper Chris Maxwell on the edge of his box but lofted it over the stranded stopper who had raced off his line.

Josh Scowen's 84th-minute header secured the win which put the Reds back up two places into the play-offs ahead of Bradford, who lost, and Coventry, who drew.

The match was a poor spectacle but the Reds took advantage of their hosts' terrible error and were the better team after the opener having struggled in the first half. Caretaker Paul Heckingbottom made two changes to the side that lost at home to Southend a week before.

Sam Winnall came in for the injured Marley Watkins while Lloyd Isgrove returned from illness to replace Harry Chapman.

Fleetwood started the match on top and opened up their visitors up on a couple of occasions with Thomas Grant first firing just over then, later, drawing a good save from goalkeeper Adam Davies after going clean through. Davies also kept out Jimmy Ryan's 25-yard shot by diving low to his left to save.

The Reds got back into the match towards the end of the first half with Adam Hammill firing wide from the edge of the box then Ashley Fletcher heading over a George Williams cross when he should have scored.

The own goal put Barnsley ahead in the 47th minute and seemed to quieten Fleetwood down.

The visitors almost doubled their lead in the 79th minute when substitute Scowen turned a man with an amazing piece of skill then won a tackle with the ricochet putting Hammill clean through to round Maxwell only for his shot to be cleared off the line.

Five minutes later Scowen headed home Conor Hourihane's corner for his first goal since his return from injury.
