PARENTS are calling for safety improvements outside a Barnsley school after a teenage boy was seriously hurt when he was hit by a car on Monday afternoon.

The boy, a year nine pupil at Holy Trinity, Athersley South, is believed to have stepped into the road from behind a bus and was then hit by a car.

He suffered serious injuries and required surgery, but yesterday a school spokesman said he was doing well and due to come home from hospital.

Parents have raised concerns about the bus stop where the bus had been waiting. School buses pull into school grounds, but lots of pupils use regular service buses which pull up at a bus stop on Derwent Road, Athersley South, which becomes very crowded at school home time.

Sarah Marsden, 37, of Athersley Road, Athersley South, who has three children at the school, said: “It’s been an accident waiting to happen.”
