PARENTS are being told to ‘take an interest’ in their children’s school life and make sure they attend regularly as new figures show a strong relationship between attendance and exam results.

Senior teachers in Barnsley are urging parents and carers to ensure children go to school regularly so they can do their best in exams and get a good start to life.

Parents are being asked to support their children by taking an active interest in their schooling and establishing good routines to help with regular school attendance. The figures from Barnsley Council show in 2015 only five per cent of pupils who attended a Barnsley secondary school for less than 80 per cent of the academic year achieved five or more GCSEs at A* to C grade including English and maths.
