PARKING charges in Barnsley are set to increase, according to proposals due to be debated by council chiefs next week.

Barnsley Council’s ruling cabinet is expected to approve recommendations to increase some parking charges, along with changes to times when charges apply and revoking some short-stay parking restrictions. Free weekend parking will be maintained.

Charges for council-controlled parking areas were last increased in 2013 and the recommendation being made to councillors is to increase on-street parking by 20p, and off-street parking Monday to Friday (with the exception of day tickets) in central locations by between 30p and 70p depending on the duration of the stay.

A council report published ahead of the meeting on Wednesday says free weekend parking would be maintained throughout the construction of the Glass Works retail development in the town centre.
