WORK starts this weekend on widening a pathway from Oakwell to Barnsley town centre so it can be used by pedestrians and cyclists.

Motorists are being warned to expect months of delays while work is underway to widen the footpath that runs from the entrance of the Trans-Pennine Trail on Pontefract Road into the town centre.

It comes after senior councillors agreed on Wednesday to introduce new peak time waiting and loading restrictions on Pontefract Road, between the junction with Bala Street and Oakwell View, for Monday to Saturday, to ensure it is a safe route for walkers and cyclists to use.

Coun Margaret Bruff said she welcomed the new link between the trail and the town centre. She added: “It has been needed for a long time.”

Work begins on Sunday and is expected to take about four months to complete.
