PATIENTS at Barnsley Hospital have criticised the decision to increase car parking charges.

Some have claimed it is too expensive, particularly when being over the time limit by only a few minutes or when visiting frequently.

But bosses have defended the decision – and said free parking is available to gravely ill patients

It now costs £1.30 for one hour, £2.80 for one to two hours, £4.10 for two to four hours, and £6.90 for four to 24 hours.

Lorraine Christopher, the hospital's director of estates and facilities, said the trust was compliant with the Department of Health's car parking principles.

She added: "Our charges are reasonable for the area and are consistent with charges levied at other public organisations within the area including other NHS Trusts."
