A WAR memorial which patients on a dementia ward contributed towards has been completed.

The mural on the wall of Dearnlea Park’s dementia unit was the idea of Kerry Baker, senior carer on the ward.

Kerry, 39, said: “Quite a few of our residents can’t get out to go to town or the cenotaph, so we thought we would do our own commemoration.

“We thought it would brighten up the ward and give us something different to remember the war. We have gentlemen who were in the army and ladies who were in the land army. They enjoyed doing bits of craftwork and joining in and they like to sit by it now it’s done. Their families are very impressed by it.”

Residents on the aptly-named Poppy Unit made poppies to add to the mural, which was completed by ward staff and unveiled this week.
