TWO PCs who negotiated with a man brandishing a handgun in the town centre have won a bravery award at the Barnsley district police awards.

Simon Booth and Alison Mountain were both on duty on October 10 last year when a man was seen to fire the weapon on Wellington Street, causing the public to panic.

They were recognised for demonstrating outstanding courage.

The awards were held last Thursday at the town hall and were presented by Ch Supt Andy Brooke.

Acting Sergeant Stephen Newton won the Crawford Roebuck Trophy for top contributing police officer for helping to reduce crime in Barnsley. Over the last 12 months, he and his team made 94 arrests for various offences and recovered drugs with a street value of £181,000.
