A PICTURE of peace has been created in Barnsley town centre as part of preparations for a street art showcase.
Nick Bell, 37, made the most of the sunshine on Wednesday as he got to work on his stunning Buddha image on a wall in Mandela Gardens.
The artwork will form part of The Spaces Between, a two day showcase of street art, performance and installation in the town centre by people who receive support from Creative Recovery for drug, alcohol and mental health issues.
The showcase is intended to be ‘a raw portrayal of the human condition framed against the backdrop of a re-emerging town’, exploring how fragility, struggle and loss can be restored by real connection and understanding of how people inhabit ‘the spaces between’.
It involves a series of inspirational tales of growth and transformation, spun by people with common experiences of drug and alcohol and mental health recovery.
Nick said he got involved with the project because he was helped by Creative Recovery. He said: “I suffer with depression and art has helped me out loads.”
The showcase starts on June 30, from 2-7pm, with an art walk with street performances and there will be a guided walk with the artists from 4pm meeting at The Civic. In the evening, 7-9pm, there is live music and a celebration event at the Civic. There will be another art walk on Saturday, July 1, 12-5pm.
