Pedal power helped raise more than £27,000 for charity as a Barnsley-based property company completed the latest leg of an annual bike tour of Europe.

A 16-strong team from Dransfield Properties cycled 420 miles from Dubrovnik, Croatia, to Trieste in Italy in six days.

The Tankersley company, located on Maple Court, covers a leg of its tour of Europe every year after starting the charity cycle ride in 2007 when the riders travelled from London to Paris.

Mark Dransfield, managing director of Dransfield Properties, said: "This year certainly was a challenging ride, it was longer and tougher than previous years and everyone did really well to complete the challenge.

"We'd like to thank everyone who has sponsored and supported us so far, we really do appreciate every single penny that people donate towards our chosen charities."

A total of £27,651 was raised, which has been donated to or a leukaemia and lymphoma research project in Leeds and St Andrew's Children's Hospice, Grimsby, as well as helping other smaller community projects.

Since the ride first in 2007, more than £270,000 has been raised for charities and around 2,500 miles have been cycled.

The riders are already planning next year's route - from Trieste to Munich - with the aim of getting back to London by 2022 where the annual challenge started.
