PENISTONE Paramount took a step back in time to celebrate its centenary in style.

More than 200 invited guests attended the event, held 100 years to the day since the building was opened on October 31 1914.

Cinema staff attempted to re-create the venue's opening ceremony and welcomed Mayor of Kirklees Ken Smith, whose predecessor Joseph Blamires attended in 1914, and Thurlstone Brass Band, which performed a century ago.

Penistone Mayor Steve Marsh said: "It's not only a cinema but a venue for everything in the community. My hope is that we can keep and maintain this piece of Penistone heritage for future generations."

The building initially opened as an assembly hall and was first used as a cinema the following year when a silent film was shown on November 20 1915.
