A group of 80 churchgoers enjoyed a trip to Ireland to honour a former Penistone priest.

Members of St Mary's RC Church, Talbot Road, paid their respects at the grave of former priest Father Gerard Harney in County Mayo, along with some of the congregation of St John's Church.

The mayor of Castlebar, County Mayo, hosted the group at a civic reception and concert in the town and gifts from the mayors of Barnsley and Doncaster, towns in which Father Harney carried out his ministry, were presented.

Trip organiser Brendan Lally said: "The people we met couldn't believe that two coach loads of people could go on such a long journey to have a mass and visit the grave of an ordinary man. But in our eyes he was quite extraordinary."

Father Harney died in County Mayo in October 2010, after returning home following a short illness, but only a handful or parishioners managed to attend the funeral.

The Emigrant Liaison Committee presented an Irish Diaspora Posthumous Award to Father Harney in the form of an inscribed crystal plaque.

It was given to the Harney family who live in Castlebar but they handed it to Father Stan Maciuszek, from St Mary's Church, with the wish it remain with the people he served.
