THE council’s cabinet members have approved plans to create a new one-way road system between Barnsley Town Centre and the M1.

Last July, plans were submitted to the council to create a gyratory in a bid to ease congestion on the A628 from Town End roundabout to junction 37 of the M1.

The plans included changing 1.133 hectares of land at Penny Pie Park to highways use.

The proposed plans were met with opposition from residents and a petition campaigning against the changes was lodged.

A vigil was also held last night as last minute attempt to stop the plans being approved.
