A PENSIONER says he has been left lumbered with an old fridge freezer because he doesn’t have a credit card, debit card or access to online services to pay to have it taken away by the council.

Fred Varney says the council’s reluctance to accept cash to pay for the removal of domestic waste encourages flytipping.

Barnsley Council has been running a high-profile campaign to crackdown on flytipping but Fred says the council’s own paid-for service is not open to him.

“I’m disabled, I have no credit card, no debit card, no computer so they won’t come and get it,” said Fred, 79, of Wescoe Avenue, Great Houghton.

“I went down to the council offices at Goldthorpe, it’s in the library, they couldn’t help me so they told me to ring 773555 and arrange a collection.

“I was more than willing to pay, but I can’t.

“I’ll either just have to leave it outside to rust, or pay someone else on the quiet to come and take it away, who’s probably going to end up flytipping it.

“I remember years ago you used to be able to go down to the offices, pay, you’d get a receipt and then someone would come and pick it up.

“It’s not helping stop flytipping.”

A council spokesman said: “We don’t have the facility to take cash payments. If people can’t pay online or over the phone, we would ask them to seek support from family or friends to help them to make payment.”
