A PENSIONER who was fraught with worry about an investment killed his wife before fatally stabbing himself.

An inquest on Raymond Massey, 67, and 57-year-old Christine Tunnicliffe-Massey revealed that Mr Massey, a former miner, had a chequered mental health history.

He had been prescribed an anti-depressant at Brierley Medical Centre shortly before the couple’s deaths on November 7 last year.

The couple, who had been married for 22 years, were found dead in their semi-detached property on Beech Close, Brierley.

Post-mortem examinations concluded that Mr Massey died of a stab wound to the chest while Mrs Massey died from a combination of a neck wound, a broken spinal chord and asphyxiation.

Coroner Chris Dorries told last Friday’s inquest in Sheffield that ‘out-of-control’ anxiety problems were triggered again in Mr Massey amid unfounded fears that a property purchase had gone wrong. In reality, the investment was a ‘very good one’ and was just about to yield a 40 per cent profit for the couple, according to Det Con Mark Jones.
