A OLD potting shed in the grounds of Cannon Hall could be transformed into a Barnsley’s first pet crematorium.

The £150,000 plan has been drawn up by the council and is expected to be up and running by next year, carrying out individual cremations for cats and dogs and other small animals.

A memorial area will also be created in a wooded part of the parkland where ashes can be scattered and plaques put up to remember pets.

The brains behind the idea - which will generate income to pay for council services in the wake of almost £90m austerity cuts - is Anthony Devonport and his colleagues from the bereavement services department.

Plans to convert the unused potting shed, in an area of the Cannon Hall grounds not accessible to the public, were submitted this week.
