PHARMACISTS based at GP surgeries across Barnsley have helped free up more than 11,000 appointments and taken 2,322 requests for medication which has helped save almost 300 hours.

Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group - which commissions the town’s health services - has invested in pharmacists to work in GP practices to provide specialist medication advice and services to patients. The pharmacists work alongside GPs and nurses to monitor, assess and support patients to get the best out of their medications.

It reduces the workload for GPs, which means there is more time for them to see patients.

Collectively, they have helped to free up more than 11,000 GP appointments, taken 2,322 requests for medication, which has saved 290 hours and carried out 4,119 medication reviews saving 687 hours.

The CCG has now been shortlisted for the national Best of Clinical Pharmacy Award at the Clinical Pharmacy Congress on April 27.
