Mike Phenix is not eligible to play for Barnsley at the moment.
The Reds are currently pushing through the necessary paperwork to allow the forward, who signed from Conference club Telford last month, to be involved in their matchday squad. Phenix was on non-contract terms at Chester.
Chief executive Ben Mansford said: "It's quite complicated. Mike can't play for us at the moment but we are hopeful that he will be soon."
Manager Danny Wilson has been impressed with Phenix's performances in training since signing him for an undisclosed fee until 2016. The Reds boss said: "I've been very happy with him. He's going great guns. We're just getting him more minutes and managing the transition from part-time to full-time."
