Cannon Hall Farm has installed underfloor heating to its pig pens to keep the newborn piglets warm.

The luxury pighouse apartments are part of a £1.4 million development to the farm and use an air source heat pump to heat the floor.

The new system heats the floor in two zones. One zone is set at the right temperature for the piglets and the other zone for the older pigs is slightly cooler. This is a more economical system than heat lamps, which are used by most farms across the country.

The pigs have taken well to their new home. Richard Nicholson, one of the farm's owners said: "They're in a tropical paradise."

Although initially expensive to install, the new system is expected to save the farm £2,500 a year on electricity.
