BARNSLEY'S new Central Library has moved a step closer with planning permission now granted for the glazed building which designers say will appear as a "beacon" at night.

It will be constructed with champagne coloured aluminium and a largely glazed exterior, but the original idea that light from the buidling would be enough to illuminate a new public square outside appear to have been dropped.

Instead, planners now say: "The level of glazing will mean that the internal lighting will ensure the building appears like a 'beacon' in the evening."

The building will replace the block of shops which housed the old Superdrug store and will cover the same ground area.
