Manchester City legend Mike Summerbee unveiled a plaque for former Barnsley, City and England star Eric Brook in his hometown of Mexborough.

The winger signed for the Reds from Wath Athletic aged 18 in 1926 and played 78 games, scoring 17 goals, before moving on to Manchester City where he played for 11 years until the outbreak of the Second World War. He scored 177 goals in 493 games for City and ten in 18 for England, with Tommy Taylor and John Stones the only ex-Reds to play more games for the national team.

The highlight of his time at Oakwell was a hat-trick in a 5-1 win over Southampton which included two 25-yard strikes. He died in 1965, aged 57. The plaque was unveiled at Mexborough Athletic sports ground in a ceremony arranged by Mexborough Heritage Society.

Barnsley historian David Wood said: "Eric was a lad from the Dearne Valley who quickly rose to become one of the true stars of English football between the wars. Although his time at Oakwell was brief, it was enough leave an impression that still resonates today.

"It also enabled him to learn his trade with his wing partner and fellow future England international Fred Tilson who also moved to Manchester City. Eric's goal-scoring record at Manchester City, which was only recently beaten by Sergio Aguero, is even more remarkable when you consider he was playing in a wide position."
