CHARGING points for up to ten electric vehicles are being installed at Barnsley Hospital to support staff who want to make the switch from a petrol or diesel car.

Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids have significant emissions benefits, and with costs falling, and battery mileage range increasing, the transition is becoming easier.

Mohammed Sajard, the hospital’s sustainability manager, said the electricity will be supplied by the hospital’s onsite combined heat and power plant which is more environmentally friendly than grid energy.

Paul Nicholes, the hospital’s electric vehicles champion, said: “Electric propulsion is better than internal combustion in almost every respect. They’re quieter, smoother, more responsive and most of all much cleaner with zero tail pipe emissions.

“They charge up overnight just like your phone and, if your commute is like most people’s, then they’re much cheaper to run day-to-day.”

To reduce the environmental impact from travel-related carbon emissions, the hospital has been offering cycle to work, electric bike loan schemes and other fitness events.
