THE sergeant in charge of local policing has vowed to get on top of persistent problems with illegal off-road bikers at a local beauty spot - starting with an action day this month.

Brad Wynne, from the Barnsley East Local Policing Team, promised the public that more resources are on their way to the district which will help the LPT battle the bikers, who have destroyed paths and woodland tracks at West Haigh Wood.

The woodland, between Great Houghton and Grimethorpe, is in the throes of a new conservation project started by the West Haigh Wood Custodians group and has secured the police’s support.

“More resources are coming,” Sgt Wynne said. “We’ll be publicising our presence in the district and it will leave those responsible with nowhere to go.”
