A POLICE commander has stepped in over a spate of diesel thefts at a Barnsley industrial estate after businesses complained the force wasn’t doing enough to investigate the crimes.

Firms based in the Albion Road area of Carlton Industrial estate, including a window and door manufacturer, mechanics and soft drinks distributor, have been targeted in recent weeks by gangs stealing diesel from their yards. Some had even had lead stripped from roofs and one firm’s CCTV camera was stolen.

Martin Nettleton, managing director at Euroglaze, said his wagons were targeted four times in two weeks, with the latest theft being on Tuesday. In total diesel to the value of about £2,000 has been syphoned from the vehicles. Scrap aluminium has also been taken from the yard.
