A MAN who mistakenly got in a car thinking it was a taxi was left tied up in woodland after being robbed, the Chronicle can reveal.

Passersby heard the 35-year-old man's desperate cries for help in the woodland area of Leapings Lane, and he was taken to hospital for treatment of shock and hypothermia.

The man had left a pub in Towngate, Thurlstone, shortly after midnight on the morning of Saturday 17 May when he flagged down what he thought was a taxi.

The two men inside told him they would drop him off in Barnsley but ended up stopping in woodland, dragging him from the vehicle and robbing him of all his jewellery, a watch, his mobile phone and cash. He was left with his hands and feet bound.

DC Fiona Bowling said: “This was an absolutely terrifying robbery on a man who was making his way home after a night out with friends.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who saw any suspicious activity within the Thurlstone area on Friday night into Saturday morning, involving a dark-coloured motor vehicle, to call police as a matter of urgency.”

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 65 of Saturday 17 May. Alternatively, ring Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
