POLICE will soon be able to recruit and train volunteers to use speed guns and catch out speeding motorists plaguing residential areas.

From April a new ‘community speed watch’ scheme is being set up by police in Barnsley, which allows members of the public to be trained in how to use the devices so they can go out on operations with PCSOs.

The new scheme was revealed by Sergeant Brad Wynne at a community meeting held in Kexborough on Monday, councillors and residents frequently complain about speeding vehicles in their areas.

Sgt Wynne said the traffic monitoring scheme will be run by the new neighbourhood policing teams coming into force in April with the help of volunteers and locations for operations can be suggested by the community.
