A SERVING South Yorkshire Police officer will appear at Leeds Crown Court next month charged with assaulting a teenager.

Liam Stewart, whose address was not made public by District Judge Joanne Hirst at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday due to the nature of his work, appeared following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

PC Stewart was charged after an incident that took place on August 8 of last year near The Hillsborough Tap, a pub on Langsett Road, Sheffield which resulted in an 18-year-old man, Louis McAndrew, having to undergo surgery for nose injuries. The teen had come into contact with the police and was subsequently arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer, prior to Sheffield Wednesday’s clash with Chesterfield in the League Cup that evening.

However, the charges were dropped when CCTV footage was uncovered.

PC Stewart will next appear at Leeds Crown Court on December 27.
