A PLEA has gone out for volunteers to sell poppies for this year’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

The Churchfield branch, which covers the town centre, has nearly 400 two-hour-long sessions to man in the two weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday on November 12.

And that means a lot of volunteers are needed.

Goff Griffiths, from the Churchfield branch, said the appeal will be officially launched in the town centre on October 28 but they are trying to sort out people to man stands as soon as possible.

“This year, to date, more than £57,000 has been allocated to veterans, spouses, partners and children in our town,” he said.

“A veteran does not mean an 80-year-old. We have veterans who, for medical reasons, have been discharged from HM Forces as young as 19. Once seven days’ pay has been received they qualify for the support of the Royal British Legion.”

He said last year’s appeal in the borough raised more than £192,000, with scouts, cadets, and even councillors helping to sell poppies in places like supermarkets and the Alhambra centre.

To volunteer, a person just needs to commit to being there for two hours. To help ring Marion on 07377 313735.
