GRIMETHORPE Post Office will remain closed for up to six weeks on safety grounds following an incident which resulted in its cash machine being blown out of the wall.

Police said a ‘large amount’ of money was stolen during the raid, which happened at about 1.40am on May 1, but a decision has been taken to not reopen the High Street building because of its weakened structure.

A statement, issued by shop manager Stella and David Milner, said: “The damage has been surveyed and it is more severe than we first thought. Unfortunately that leaves us no option but to close until it’s all sorted, as it isn’t safe for both the public and our staff to be on the premises. Repair works will begin next week and we will do everything possible to reopen as soon as possible.”
