A SCHOOL chef from Barnsley narrowly missed out on a chance to show off his skills on the national stage.

Matt Betts was runner-up in last year’s LACA School Chef of the Year but this year, he was pipped at the post in the qualifying stage as he came runner-up in the Yorkshire and Humber regional final at Barnsley College.

Matt, from The Mill Academy, Worsbrough, gave an ‘excellent performance’ with his well-executed dishes but was beaten to the regional title by Becky Crossley from York High School.

The winner of the regional final goes onto the national competition in Stratford-upon-Avon, as well as having a chance at winning a £1,000 cash prize and the LACA 2020 School Chef of the Year trophy.
