FIVE primary-age children were picked up during a sweep of skiving hotspots in Barnsley.

A joint patrol by Barnsley Council officers and police targeted areas in the town centre where kids are known to congregate during school hours.

The transport interchange, Cheapside shopping precinct, Mandela Gardens and the Alhambra Centre were all visited by the patrol during a school day in November, the figures for which have just been released.

The aim was to stop and challenge parents with school-age children, and unaccompanied children, to raise awareness of the importance of school attendance.

In total, 30 kids were stopped and challenged on why they were’t at school - 15 were primary school age and 15 secondary school age. Five of those primary school children were unaccompanied. Three of the 30 children attended schools outside the borough and another three were being home educated.
