JOSEPH Locke Primary school has become the first primary school in the region to offer British Sign Language (BSL) to pupil’s who have hearing impairments.

SignSpell is a fun and inclusive approach to help readers to develop their literacy skills. All of the SignSpell resources are created to help children develop physical expression of words; from recognising signs, to repeating, recalling, and reusing in real life situations.

Joseph Locke began teaching SignSpell in September 2017, and has been introducing it to students as part of a cross curriculum teaching aid and educational resource for Key Stage 1 and 2.

Karen Clayton, who works as a special educational needs teacher at the school said: “As an inclusive school with a resource provision for hearing impaired children we embrace the learning of British Sign Language for every child and adult who is part of our school community

“SignSpell has enabled us to learn BSL in a fun and interactive way as well as helping improving our spelling and literacy skills.”
