A PRIMARY school deemed inadequate by Ofsted 18 months ago is taking effective action towards the removal of ‘special measures’ according to a letter sent to the school by the lead inspector.

The Hill Primary was put into special measures - Ofsted’s most serious category of failing schools - in October 2016.

But last month, in its third monitoring inspection since then, inspectors said while outcomes for children in reading, writing and maths remain low, the rate of improvement has begun to quicken recently.

“Leaders have identified that children in the early years are not making as much progress in reading, writing and mathematics as they are in other areas of the curriculum,” said the report.

“The senior leader who is leading the early years, until a substantive leader is appointed, has developed plans to address this weakness.”

A restriction preventing the school from recruiting newly-qualified teachers has been lifted.
