A BARNSLEY primary school has been told it is making 'reasonable progress' towards the removal of special measures - Ofsted's most serious category of failing schools.

Richard Newman Primary, on Laithes Lane, Athersley, was put in special measures following an Ofsted inspection last May and has had to work to improve the quality of the school's leadership, management, teaching and pupil achievement.

The latest Ofsted report says: "The school is making reasonable progress towards the removal of special measures."

The report identifies that the school has a clear and structured plan to tackle the areas highlighted in previous reports as in need of improvement.

The school, as a result of this progress, is now permitted to appoint 'one newly qualified teacher before the next monitoring inspection'.
