Barnsley are postponing their next promotion party until after tomorrow’s match at Bristol Rovers, where they can win their first league title in 64 years.

The Reds have not won a league since finishing top of Division Three North in the 1954/55 season.  They are currently level on points with leaders Luton Town who have a superior goal difference by four and have scored more goals.

Daniel Stendel’s side have not been top of the league since the first two weeks of the season in August while Luton have led the division since January.  Barnsley will look for a fifth straight win tomorrow while Luton – who have won just one of their last five – host 12th-placed Oxford United who are the form team in the division having won six and drawn two of their last eight.

Both games kick off at 5.30pm tomorrow and, in order to win the title the Reds must either better the Hatters’ result or, if both sides win, exceed Luton’s winning margin by five goals.

Head coach Stendel said: “Our goal is to win the game and then we will see what will happen with Luton. We want to win the title and we will give our all but it’s not really in our hands. I don’t think we will win 10-0 but, if we win, maybe we will win the title. “It’s nice that we have one game left after we are promoted.  We want to celebrate with the fans but only after a victory.”

Jacob Brown came off injured before half-time in Saturday’s win over Blackpool, before which he had been named Young Player of the Year.  Coach Dale Tonge said: “Jacob is struggling a little bit and more than likely he will be out for the weekend. But we will have players who can replace him and do a good job.”

Kieffer Moore is likely to replace Brown and start up front with Cauley Woodrow with Mike Bahre on the right of a 4-4-2. Rovers secured their safety with a 0-0 draw at Fleetwood Town on Saturday and are 16th in the league.  They have by far the best defensive record in the bottom half of the table, having only let in 49 goals from their 45 matches.

But their tally of 45 scored is the second-lowest in the division behind AFC Wimbledon. Their matches have brought the fewest goals of any League One side this season. Rovers also have the worst home record in the division, having lost half of their 22 games at the Memorial Stadium while winning just five. They also have the fewest home goals at one per game.

Manager Darrell Clarke, who took the Gas from non-league football to League One with two promotions, left the club in mid-December when they were second-bottom with just 17 points from 22 games and on a five-match losing run. Graham Coughlan – the former Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United defender – took over as caretaker manager before being given the job permanently, losing just five of his 23 league games so far.

He won three matches over the Christmas period then another three-match winning run at the start of March took them out of the relegation zone.  Since then, they have won just one of their last nine matches which was thanks to a last-minute goal at home to relegated Bradford City.

Tonge said: “They will be a tough opposition. I know Graham very well.  He was my captain at Rotherham.  I know the type of character he is and that he has that Irish grit.  He has turned them around since he came in and made them harder to beat.

"They know our situation and they will try to spoil our party.  But for us, there’s no pressure or tension within the group. We will just enjoy the game. It would be a massive achievement if we won the title.  We can’t control if that happens but we can control winning the game.”
