A MAJOR shake-up of children’s surgery proposed at Barnsley Hospital will see young patients sent out of town for certain treatments.

Children’s surgery and anaesthesia services are being reviewed across South Yorkshire by Commissioners Working Together, a group of eight NHS clinical commissioning groups and NHS England.

Under new proposals, if children in Barnsley need an operation under general anaesthetic for certain types of surgery either at night, weekend or require an overnight stay - they will be sent out of town to another hospital.

This could be either Chesterfield, Doncaster, Pinderfieds or Sheffield, depending on which option, subject to public consultation, is given the go ahead.

Under all three options proposed, operations would no longer be provided in Barnsley.
