OVER the last few years, our town's unsung heroes have been recognised thanks to the Proud of Barnsley Awards.

This year is no different.

The search is once again on to find people who make Barnsley a great place to live, work and visit.

And we need your help.

Do you know anyone who goes above and beyond to help others? Perhaps you know someone who keeps a local park or green space tidy? Or a young person who is excelling in their chosen field?

Many of these people will believe they don't deserve any kind of recognition at all. But we disagree. So if you know someone who fits the bill, you need to nominate them.

Last year, we brought you a glitzy ceremony which saw a whole host of people win awards from from Volunteer of the Year and Young Superstar to Exceptional Achievement.

There were heartwarming stories, including those of Terry Haynes who won an award for dedicating the last 50 years of his life to St John Ambulance. Terry joined in 1963 and is a founder member of the Grimethorpe section. Over the years he has taken cadets to both national and international competitions where they have won many awards.

Another winner was Bill Winstanley, who has been involved with junior football for more than 15 years and a manager for 11. Bill coaches, supports and encourages children to work hard, work together and to be part of a team as well achieve amazing things.

Les Binns also picked up an award after making headlines around the world when he saved the life of a stranger near the top of the world's highest mountain. Les was hailed a hero after abandoning his climb just a few hundred metres from the summit of Mount Everest to save the life of Indian woman Sunita Hazra.

In the Young Superstar category, Charley Dyson was selected as the winner after his scooter skills wowed judges. The Wombwell youngster, who honed his skills at a Brampton skate park, has taken part in competitions all over the world and has attracted national and international media attention.

This year's ceremony will once again be hosted by radio DJ Stephanie Hirst and former Look North presenter Christa Ackroyd.

There are 15 categories. These are: Young Superstar, School of the Year, Children's Champion, Carer of the Year, Sporting Achievement, Love Where You Live, Start-up of the Year, Exceptional Achievement, Volunteer of the Year, Charity Fundraising Team, Community Hero, Triumph Over Adversity, Hospital Hero, Community Group, Charity Fundraiser.
