The Proud of Barnsley awards 2018 took place at the Metrodome as the people in the town were honoured for their special achievements. 

The seventh annual awards were presented by Stephanie Hirst and Christa Ackroyd.

The Triumph Over Adversity Award went to Luke Palfreyman. Luke was on the donor recipient list for 18 months and became seriously ill before receiving a double lung transplant. He now has a new outlook on life and is looking to build his future.

Duncan Owen-Elmer won the Charity Fundraiser Award. Duncan is a volunteer for Macmillan Cancer Support. He has given more than 285 hours of his time to collect money and has raised more than £19,000 so far.

Barnsley Gymnastics Club are the Community Group of the Year winners. The club has had regular success in competitions with several gymnasts being called into Yorkshire squads.

The Stroke Unit won the Hospital Hero award. Staff on the ward made it possible for Jack Baker - who had no immediate family - to spend his dying days with his beloved pet dog, Perry.

The Young Superstar winner was Linden Murray. He is passionate about wildlife and the environment, and spent his birthday dredging out a dilapidated canal.

The school award was won by Meadstead Primary. The school has been nominated by several parents for helping children with special educational needs, behavioural issues, autism, and other personal issues.

The next winner was Children’s Champion John Tumman. John and his father Ged opened their first Karate Club in 1978 with less than ten students. Now, John teaches up to three sessions a day, alongside weekend events, training courses, summer camps, school classes and charity events.

The next award is the Carer of the Year and the winner is Michelle Ryder. Michelle’s son William has a number of complex medical problems which have left him unable to talk. He suffers from epilepsy, loss of vision in one eye, can only walk short distances and is tube-fed.

The Sporting Achievement Award went to Katherine Brunt. Cricketer Katherine became England’s top wicket-taker of all-time this summer.

Owd’ Martha’s Yard won the Love Where You Live award. The community garden in Hoyland is the only one open to anyone to go and enjoy its beauty and peacefulness. It is maintained by volunteers and regular gardening sessions are held.

The Start-up of the Year award went to Wool Couture Company. The designer and retailer of luxury yarns and wool DIY kits, has opened its first shop in Brierley. 

Adam and Katie Dengel won the Exceptional Achievement award. They created artificial limbs using a 3D printer set up in their bedroom for their son Tommy who was born with no right hand, and they went on to form The LimbBo Foundation.

Mayor Steve Green gave his award to scout volunteer and paramedic Gavin Doxey. Councillor Linda Burgess handed the Dementia Champion Award to Barnsley Central Library Service.

Volunteer of the Year was Julie Brown. She founded the Butterflies Dementia Support and Activities Group after giving up her job in a school to care for her father who has dementia. She runs the group almost single-handedly, with the invaluable support of project workers and a co-ordinator. 

Sarah’s Goal won the Charity Fundraising Team award. Sarah’s Goal was launched with money raised in memory of Sarah Hanson Powell who died of breast cancer. It helps children and teenagers play football by providing kit and contributing towards subs.

The Community Hero is Bruce Dyer. The former Barnsley FC player has committed much of his time to redeveloping Grimethorpe Miners’ Welfare Sports Ground in to a community hub.

The special award was presented to Olympian Dorothy Hyman.
