REGULARS at a local pub rallied together to raise more than £16,000 for Prostate Cancer UK - with a series of feats including an auction where a McDonald’s cheeseburger was sold for £55.

The Pheasant, on Cross Street, Monk Bretton, raised half of the £16,100 through a golf day and auction.

And for the rest of the cash, three patrons took part in the mammoth ‘Football to Amsterdam’ 145-mile bike ride from Oakwell Stadium to Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Arena in June, which saw more than 100 cyclists including ex-Reds Jon Parkin and Viv Anderson take part.

“The effort of everyone has been fantastic for such a small establishment,” said landlord Steve Etherington, 53.

“It’s a men’s pub, we’re all men, and mathematically if you broke it down one night, somebody in the room must have prostate cancer.

“It affects everyone.”

Steve, his wife Karen, and the pub’s regulars decided on Prostate Cancer UK after the father of Alan Dalby - who took part in the bike ride alongside Gareth Darn and James Leishman - was diagnosed with the condition.

Alan, 56, of Newhill Road, has taken part in the bike ride for the last four years but this is the first year he has involved the pub in his fundraising.

“The idea for the bike ride when I first did it came through the Fit Reds, but it was more fat Reds when we turned up,” said Alan.

“The auction was phenomenal. I’ve been coming here 92 years and I’ve never seen it as busy.

“Our thanks go to all the donors and sponsors.”

The golf day at Sandhill Golf Club, Little Houghton, and auction - hosted by Colin Crossland of Watts - took place in May after just three months of planning.

Prizes donated - a lot of which came from Elliot Batty - included a boot signed by England veteran Paul Gascoigne, a Manchester United shirt and the aforementioned cheeseburger, bought by a patron on their way to the pub and auctioned off for £55.

“Nobody flinched from putting their hand in their pocket and everyone had a good time, said Steve.

“Everybody was surprised we’d raised so much just on that one night.

“The scariest thing is how many are supporting it next year already.

“We think next year will be bigger and we’ll raise even more.”

A date has already been set for next year’s follow-up, on June 19, with a Just Giving page now live.
