A FORMER pupil of Barnsley Academy has received an excellence award from the Royal Geographical Society for achieving one the highest marks nationally in the 2017 GCSE examinations.

Curtis Evers, 17, of Ardsley, who is currently studying at the prestigious Queen Ethelburga’s College in York on an academic scholarship, scored the best GCSE results ever achieved at Barnsley Academy last summer.

He has now been recognised for his achievements in geography specifically, and is one of only 20 students from across the country to receive the honour, and the only one from Yorkshire.

Stephen Dixon, principal of Barnsley Academy, said: “Everyone here is extremely proud of Curtis, who recorded an incredible 3 Grade 9s, 8 A*s and an A in last summer’s exams - by far the best GCSE results a student at Barnsley Academy has ever achieved.”

As of last year, English and maths GCSEs are graded with numbers rather than letters, with 9 being the new top grade.

“This excellence award from the Royal Geographical Society is a fitting reward for his hard work and commitment.”
