Schoolchildren in Silkstone dressed in period costume and played football to re-enact a First World War Christmas truce and learn about local history.

Pupils aged nine and ten, from Silkstone Primary School, created a black-and-white film based on a series of unofficial ceasefires, including football matches played in no man's land, which took place on the Western Front in December 1914.

The video was shot at Silverwood Scout Camp, formerly the training base for the Barnsley Pals - a specially formed unit of the army of men who had enlisted together.

Year five teacher Alex Simon, who came up with the idea, said: "It's coming up to the 100-year anniversary of the war and we're lucky we've got this historical site on our doorstep."
