THE GREAT fire of London was recreated in Wath.

Year two pupils at Wath Victoria school built their own Pudding Lane and then, with the help of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, watched it burn down just like the famous London blaze of 1666.

Teacher and assistant head Diane Harris said the blaze was part of the school’s aim to making learning more engaging.

Previously, the class had been visited by ‘Sir William’ - a friend of King Charles who told the story of the fire - and built shelters in the playground for those who lost their homes.

Mrs Harris said: “The children made their own houses themselves and then we placed them close together to recreate the experience. It was hard going on Monday because of the rain but by the end, the whole of Pudding Lane was destroyed.

“The fire department was there as a safety measure but also helped the children understand that fire is dangerous. They sprayed it out and then some pupils had the chance to see the engine up close.”
