A BARNSLEY man who fell 40ft into a quarry while he was cutting the hedge in his garden is recovering at home.

Alan Dewhirst, 77, was leaning over to cut the hedge at the edge of his garden at his home in Newhill Road, Smithies, when he tumbled over the other side.

He hit several things on the way down but his fall was broken by a tree which probably saved his life.

He suffered a broken pelvis, broken arm, broken ribs and a punctured lung and was taken to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

He has since been discharged and is now recovering at home.
