A QUARTER of new businesses in Barnsley do not survive to see their second year, a debt advice charity has warned.

New figures show 870 new businesses were set up in Barnsley last year but the charity Business Debtline is concerned over of a ‘lack of support’ available to help new ventures through their first few months and years.

Business Debtline, run by the Money Advice Trust, provides free and independent advice on business financial problems, helping about 110 small business owners in Barnsley every year.

It says 26 per cent of new businesses set up in Barnsley do not survive to see their second birthday, with six per cent winding up in their first year.
