THOUSANDS of hours of film footage and sound recordings which document Barnsley’s history are to be made available and preserved for all time thanks to national lottery funding.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant of £55,000 which will enable every single film and sound recording to be ‘digitised’ and made available to the public.

There are hundreds of individual items, including old cine films and ‘super 8’ footage, VHS video recordings and old sound recordings.

They include footage of mayors’ parades from over the decades, as well as military parades, and a film about the Barnsley Home Guard from the 1940s.

There is also footage of various royal visits from throughout the last century.
