REDEVELOPMENT of Barnsley town centre is creating work for unemployed people.

Construction firm Henry Boot is working in partnership with the Department of Work and Pensions and so far 17 unemployed people have secured full-time work on the Glass Works Phase 1.

Ryan O’Loughlin, project director for Henry Boot Construction, said: “As part of our ongoing collaboration with the DWP, it’s our joint aim to create further employment opportunities as the scheme progresses and support local people looking to forge a career in the construction industry.

“Stephen Phillips is a prime example of a previously unemployed individual from Barnsley who has excelled in his new full-time role.

“Stephen has been working with the library construction team for the past year. He has shown a high level of commitment and dedication to delivering top quality workmanship since day one.

“As a local employer we are focused on both the success of The Glass Works Phase 1 project but also supporting local people into employment to meet future demand for construction work in the South Yorkshire region.”

Stephen, who lives in Royston, has taken on the role of a multi purpose labourer. He said: “Working with Henry Boot on The Glass Works Phase 1 project has been a fantastic opportunity for me.

“I am from Barnsley so to be able to contribute to the new development is exciting. Henry Boot Construction has also provided me with a number of training opportunities to allow me to expand my skillset.”
