Barnsley lost 2-1 at Premier League Newcastle United in their final pre-season game. The match took place at the Magpies’ training ground with no press allowed. Former England striker Andy Carroll put the hosts in front then half-time substitute Marcel Ritzmaier levelled after a fine move involving Patrick Schmidt and then Kilian Ludewig. Jack Walton saved from Jonjo Shelvey, Matt Ritchie and Alain St Maximin while Conor Chaplin was denied by Karl Darlow. Jacob Murphy won and scored a penalty in the 77th minute.
