Barnsley crashed back down to Earth following their epic cup midweek game against Everton with a heavy loss at Rochdale in League One.

It was a disappointing performance and result for the Reds at the club managed by their former manager Keith Hill.

Head coach Lee Johnson said in the build-up to the game that fatigue would be a major factor after the Reds played 120 minutes against Everton in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday. He made three changes with Sam Winnall, Josh Scowen and Dan Crowley dropping out to be replaced by Conor Wilkinson, Joe Rothwell and Kadeem Harris on his full debut.

Dale took the lead in the eighth minute through Calvin Andrew's powerful left-footed shot from 20 yards which was heading for the bottom right corner before Reds goalkeeper Adam Davies could only push it into the roof of the net.

Ian Henderson and Donal McDermott shot just wide of the right post with low long-range shots while Jamie Allen's weak effort inside the box failed to test Davies.

Harris was Barnsley's only bright spark and almost levelled when he cut past former Reds left-back and curled just over from the edge of the box.

But it was the hosts who got the next goal as McDermott's left-sided corner floated over Davies and was headed in at the back post by Vincenti.

Johnson made changes at the break with Crowley and Winnall replacing Rothwell and Wilkinson but it was the hosts who continued to dominate. Davies should have been punished for a poor punch but managed to save McDermott's shot before he later kept out a Vincenti header and Conor Hourihane's last-diatch tackle denied Andrew a tap-in.

The third goal came in the 63rd minute when home captain Jamie Allen appeared to foul Hourihane before he slipped in Henderson to dink the ball over Davies.

Barnsley finally had a shot on target in the 72nd minute as Ben Pearson's effort was tipp around the left post by home 'keeper Josh Lillis. But it was a day to forget for the team and their 1,295 supporters.
