Barnsley reached the play-offs in spectacular style with a 4-1 win at champions Wigan Athletic on Sunday.

Wigan took the lead early on but Sam Winnall netted twice to put the Reds 2-1 up at the break then long-range strikes from Conor Hourihane and Josh Brownhill completed the rout.

The result confirmed the Reds had finished in sixth place and will now take on Walsall in the play-off semi-finals at Oakwell on Saturday then the Banks's Stadium the following Thursday.

Wigan started the better and took the lead in the tenth minute when Yanic Wildschutt's cross from the left was clearly handled by Alfie Mawson but there was no need for a penalty as League One's top-scorer Will Grigg smashed in from close range.

The hosts were dominant with Jason Pearce and Chris McCann both firing over when well-placed but the Reds slowly grew into the match and levelled on 33 minutes.

Winnall was down hurt after being beaten to a throughball by goalkeeper Lee Nicholls when Josh Brownhill won an excellent tackle on the edge of the box and the ball ran to Ashley Fletcher who was taken out by Stephen Warnock. Winnall got up to convert the penalty.

It was 2-1 12 minutes later when Lloyd Isgrove brilliantly skipped past two men into the home box and, after his shot from a tight angle was blocked by the goalkeeper, Winnall tapped into the empty net from six yards out.

The Reds extended their lead 11 minutes into the second half through their captain. Goalkeeper Nicholls made a mess of a Josh Scowen cross then, after Fletcher pulled it back to Hourihane, the home stopper should have kept out the 20-yard shot but it nestled into the bottom left corner.

The fourth goal was particularly special as Brownhill bent a 25-yard free-kick into the top right corner followed by huge celebrations between the players and fans.

Wigan's McCann was sent off in injury-time for an off-the-ball clash with Adam Hammill.
