Having fallen seven points adrift at the bottom of the Championship after Saturday's 2-0 loss to Cardiff City, leaving Barnsley desperate for victories, now is possibly not the best time for the Reds to visit their ultimate 'bogey ground'.

Barnsley won their second trip to Queens Park Rangers' Loftus Road stadium in 5-0 in January 1950 but, since then, they have lost 22 and drawn three of their 25 visits including 11 successive defeats. They will be aiming for a first win there in more than 70 years on Saturday.

QPR are one of the clubs Barnsley have found it hardest to win at in their history, along with Coventry City who are also unbeaten in 25 home games against the Reds since 1923 at Highfield Road, the Ricoh Arena and Sixfields.

A 2-2 draw under Dave Bassett in 1999, in which Nicky Eaden scored a late equaliser after Geoff Thomas had put the Reds in front, was the last time they returned from the West London club with anything other than a defeat.

Their last trip to QPR was a 1-0 loss in February 2018 settled by a stunning long-range strike from ex-Red Josh Scowen whose former Oakwell boss Paul Heckingbottom left the Reds for Leeds United two days later.

That Barnsley side was relegated and, with another drop becoming more likely after two straight 2-0 losses followed three successive wins without conceding, victory on Saturday could be the kind of history-making statement win Gerhard Struber needs to keep hope alive with eight games left after this weekend.

The Reds have won four of their last ten away matches, including at other London clubs Millwall and Fulham. They won 5-3 at home to Rangers in December, with Conor Chaplin netting the first three Reds goals, and victory on Saturday would mean they have done a third 'double' after beating both Hull and Fulham home and away.

As well as a tough place for Barnsley to go, traditionally, Loftus Road is the most high-scoring ground in the EFL with 70 for and against the Hoops this season. They are the top-scorers on their own turf but their 33 conceded are the joint most along with Hull City and Barnsley.

Mark Warburton's men are unbeaten in six, with three wins and three draws, following a 3-1 win at sixth-placed Preston North End in which the Hoops came from behind and had a man sent off at 1-1. QPR are 13th in the table, six points off the play-offs.

After Saturday's game, Struber said: “We are looking forward. We have a week to bring the boys to another situation. But right now it is not easy.I am 100 per cent convinced we will have a good week in training and bring good energy in the next game."
